Abstract Content

Woody invasives management is a critical issue globally, requiring united and collaborative strategies to tackle such a pressing issue. While various management and research efforts have been put on the ground across Montana over the years, we know taking united strides across all watersheds with strategic prioritization is key to move forward with success. For this reason, a group of dedicated individuals secured funding to develop a statewide plan in 2023. The Montana Woody Invasives Working Group (coordinated by Invasive Species Action Network) drove the development of the plan, which addresses common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), and saltcedar (Tamarix chinensis, T. ramosissima, and all associated hybrids). The Working Group represents a wide range of state and federal agencies, municipalities, NGOs, applicators, landowners, producers, academics, and state congressional representatives. This presentation will provide an overview of the work required to develop the plan and outreach materials as well as next steps toward implementation and filling gaps that remain in the management of woody invasive species across Montana.
